What Level Should I Choose?
Parent–Child Swim Lessons (for infants and toddlers,
six months to three years)
This 30-minute class is for children six to 36 months and their
parents. The primary objective is to get both the parent and child
comfortable in the water. The child will be exposed to games that
use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes, and
blowing bubbles.
Shrimp/Kipper: 6–12 months old.
This is a water adjustment class designed to promote positive parent/child
experiences through fun games and songs.
Inia: 13-18 months old.
Parents must be in the water with child. No diapers—use plastic pants or tight fitted pants around legs. The purpose of this class is to encourage children to become independent in the water with the help of the parent through fun games and songs.
Perch: 19-36 months old.
Parents must be in the water with child. No diapers—use plastic
pants or tight fitted pants around legs. The purpose of this class
is to encourage children to become independent in the water with
the help of the parent through fun games and songs.
Pikes with Parents
For children 3–4 years old who aren’t quite ready to
take swim lessons by themselves. Instructor will teach Pike level
skills with parents in the water.
Preschool Swim Lessons (ages 3-5 yrs.)
The 30-minute class is taught by a caring, YMCA swim instructor.
Must be 3 years old at start of class.
Pike
No prerequisites. Beginner skills; learning to put face in water,
back float with assistance, PFD safety, jump in water and paddle
stroke using large flotation device.
Eels
Intermediate skills. Swimmer must complete all Pike skills first
with small flotation device. Eels will learn to float on front and
back, glides, rhythmic breath, PFD safety, sitting dives and paddle
stroke with small flotation device.
Rays
Advanced Skills. Swimmer must complete all Eels’ skills
first without flotation device. Rays will be learning the front
crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, treading water with no
flotation device.
Starfish
Creative Skills. Swimmer must complete all Rays’ skills. Swimmer
will learn watermanship and work on endurance. Must be approved
by Aquatic Director.
Youth Swim Lessons (ages 6–12)
The YMCA youth program is a seven level program with each level
building upon the preceding one. Must be 6 years old at start of
class.
Polliwog – Beginner
No previous lessons necessary. Water adjustment, front and back
float, paddle stroke 25 ft. and rhythmic breathing. Swimming in
shallow water and working toward building confidence in deep water.
Guppy – Advanced Beginner
Rotary breathing and front crawl, treading water, back
crawl and diving introduced. Swimming in deep water.
Minnow – Intermediate
25 yds. front crawl with rotary breathing, 25 yds. back crawl, longer
treading water, survival floating and advanced survival skills.
Fish – Advanced Intermediate
50 yds. front crawl, 50 yds. back crawl, 50 yds. breaststroke kick,
50 yds. elementary backstroke, dolphin kick and underwater swimming.
Flying Fish – Swimmer
100 yds. each front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, 50
yds. butterfly stroke, individual medley.
Shark – Advanced Swimmer
Starts and turns, lifesaving medley, sidestroke and continue working
on endurance with other strokes.
Porpoise Club
For those children who have completed the progressive Shark level.
The program will cover emergency water safety, basic first aid and
will help build leadership, and provides an opportunity to become
a swim instructor.
Private Swim Lessons
Private lessons are given to children as well as adults at any ability

Free Annual Learn to Swim Week
April 2009, week TBA
Learn to Swim Week is for the non-swimmer or beginning swimmer,
ages 3-12 years. Children learn water safety, adjustment to water,
how to float front and back, paddle stroke, confidence and make
the summer months a safe and enjoyable time. Enrollment is limited.

Swim Birthday Parties (ages 6-16)

Lifeguard Training Course
The participant must be at least 15 years old, able to swim 250
yards front crawl, 250 yards breaststroke, tread water, retrieve
a 10 lb. brick from 7-10 feet of water & swim to shallow end
with the brick. Upon successful completion, a certificate is presented.
